In December, as I was searching online for a way to fulfill my life dream of learning piano, I stumbled across a website with a name that immediately caught my attention… Musiah — "the world's first A.I Piano Teacher".
The Skeptic’s Journey: Testing the Limits of Piano AI
I must admit, this particular sentence made me skeptical initially, since I had read a lot about Artificial Intelligence and was aware of how difficult it must be for a computer to teach piano, considering all the nuances and difficulties involved in the process.
However, I was also very motivated and wanted to achieve my dream; so I gave Musiah a chance.
On February 26th, not long ago, I successfully completed the Musiah course by passing the audition and performance challenge of Lesson 131: The Lost Song.
Over these past two and a half months, I did not just learn how to play the piano; for the process is much more sophisticated and involved than this.
I had mentioned in a reflection that I wrote after the first two weeks of enrolling in the course that Musiah had taught me how to be patient and appreciate the journey of learning piano as opposed to rushing impatiently to complete the course.
Beyond Hitting Notes: Realizing My Musical Potential
In reality, there is no end to learning piano. This is an art, and Musiah, the AI piano teacher and voice who brought this wonderful mentor to life, Brendan Hogan (Musiah Inventor), have both been instrumental in helping me not just play the correct notes at the right time for the appropriate duration; but most importantly also to realize and actualize my own musical self and talent.
With such a patience and consistency anyone will be able to enjoy Musiah and learn piano.
Life After Musiah: Learning "Let It Be" with Original Arrangements
However, many are wondering probably what level of proficiency does Musiah leave you with after finishing the course? And will I be able to play any piece after completing the Lost Song?
First, I';m happy to tell you that I have almost completed learning my first song outside of the Musiah course, "Let It Be" by the Beatles with the original arrangement by Paul McCartney.
So again, with the right patience, motivation and consistency the only obstacle standing between you and your dream is only time really. However, Musiah is the perfect companion to accompany you on this journey.
Music as Language: Why the Musiah Alphabet Works
Lastly, I just wanted to draw an analogy that might prove helpful to those looking to start their own wonderful journey with Musiah. Learning piano, I've discovered, is a lot like learning a new language, especially when you're learning piano as an adult.
We become very excited once we pick the first set of words, so we begin to use them in a sentence. A native speaker of the language will be able to tell that we are beginning learners because we speak tensely and always think twice about what we say.
It usually takes years before we can begin to speak this new language naturally and understand the nuances and subtleties of its beauty.
Likewise, music is a language and sheet notation is its written format. It has an alphabet with a set grammar and accents.
Trusting the Process: Why the Gradual Steps are the Best Tools
Give yourself time to enjoy this process and trust Musiah, as your teacher, to carry you through it step by step.
I was inclined numerous times to skip a lesson and start auditioning a piece immediately, I&"'m very glad I didn&"'t.
Because now, these gradual steps that Musiah used to teach me have become the tools I used to learn "Let It Be" and the repertoire of songs and pieces I hope to continue learning in the years to come.
