How To Import A Song Into The Musiah Appβs Practice Area
Do you want to master your favorite repertoire using Musiah's advanced practice tools?
STEP 1: Download a Song
Download a song you'd love to learn in MusicXML format (the filename should end with .musicxml or .mxl).
Tip: Scroll down this page for suggestions on where to find great songs in musicxml format.
STEP 2: Import the Song
Open the Musiah app's Import Wizard.
Go to PRACTICE > SELECT PIECE > MY SONGS and tap or click the IMPORT button. This opens the Musiah Import Wizard.
How to Use the Musiah Import Wizard
START
Tap or click SELECT FILE and select your downloaded .musicxml file.
DETAILS
Enter or edit details such as the Piece Title and Composer.
Tempo — This is the full or maximum tempo. Adjust as needed (you can change it later).
Use Variable Tempo — Enabled by default (if applicable) / disabled (if not applicable). If the song has only one tempo throughout, this setting has no effect and will not be auto-enabled. However, if the song includes tempo changes (e.g., allegro, adagio, accelerando, a tempo), this setting will be auto-enabled and the app's click track will follow those changes as encoded in your .musicxml file. If you prefer to practice at a single steady tempo, you can turn this setting off at any time in the Practice Area.
Category — Optional.
Instrument — A piano sound is selected by default. To choose a different Musiah instrument, tap or click the dropdown arrow and select from the list.
To preview how an instrument will sound with your song, tap or click the PLAY button.
ADJUSTMENTS
These settings affect how your song is displayed in full page view.
Note: These adjustments do not affect single-stave view.
Set Line Count — Controls how many lines of music appear per page.
Set Staff Distance — Controls the distance between the treble and bass staves.
Set System Distance — Controls the spacing between each line (system) of music.
Drag to Move — Tap or left-click and drag to fineβtune the position of the manuscript on your screen.
Scale — Use the slider to increase or decrease the overall size of the sheet manuscript.
SAVE
Tap or click the SAVE AND CLOSE button.
Great job! You can now access your imported song under MY SONGS.
You can also select a song and use the EDIT button to change any of the settings you entered during the import process.
Where To Find Good Song Arrangements / Manuscripts
There are many sites that offer sheet music in MusicXML format. Here are two good options for your consideration.
SITE 1: https://musicnote.app/en/sheet-music
Based in Vietnam, musicnote.app is a relatively new site. It has a good range of songs in MusicXMl format that are free to download.
Note: If you use the above link / url (recommended), the site will display in English.
Search for songs by Title or Artist. To download a song in MusicXML format, click the "Download MusicXML" button. If you have already registered, the song will download. If you are not yet registered, you'll see a "REGISTER" link. Registration is easy and free.
PROS:
- 1. All songs are FREE to download. (You simply need to register, which is free).
- 2. The musicxml files generally work well in Musiah.
CONS:
- 1. Search filtering is limited, e.g. you can't simply search for "piano solo" songs. So, for example, if you search on "Elvis", you'll get songs by Elvis, some of which will be piano + vocal, or guitar + vocal, etc. So you have to look through the search results manually to find piano solo. (Note: Musiah currently only supports imports of piano solo arrangements).
- 2. The MusicXML files on this site appear to be mostly generated from MIDI files. This means that they will often look different to pdf files of the same song on this site. Also, the musicxml files will only contain data from the source MIDI file, so details such as fingering, dynamics, etc (which MIDI files cannot contain) and which you may see in the pdf version will not be present in the musicxml files.
SITE 2: https://musescore.com
A prominent site, musescore.com has a wide range of songs but is a highly commercial operation. You'll usually need a musescore subscription to download songs. However, during your trial period, you may be able to download some songs for free that would otherwise require a payment after the free trial.
Search for songs by Title or Artist. To download a song in MusicXML format, click the "Download" button, choose "MusicXML" and follow the prompts (payment may be required).
PROS:
- 1. Wide range of songs.
- 2. Ability to filter by "piano solo".
- 3. MusicXML files from this site generally contain the same details such as fingering and dynamics that you'll see in pdf files of the same song on this site.
CONS:
- 1. Cost β Depending on your musescore plan, some songs may be free but many will incur a cost to download.
- 2. Songs on sites like musescore.com are uploaded by people of all backgrounds. Many are amateurs, so the accuracy of the arrangements (e.g., notes, timing) and the formatting quality of the MusicXML files can vary greatly. Even many "official" scores leave a lot to be desired.
Where to find Good Quality Manuscripts on musescore.com?
We have found one MuseScore contributor in particular, who goes by the username "scorewise", whose arrangements are consistently high quality and free from formatting issues β so they display nicely in the Musiah app.
To find manuscripts by scorewise;
- πΉ use this link https://musescore.com/sheetmusic?text=scorewise OR
- πΉ search on "scorewise" on musescore.com to see all their songs OR
- πΉ use the links below to access individual manuscripts by "scorewise".
Note: Musiah is not affiliated with musicnote.app or musescore.com or individual contributors to those sites. Links to individual manuscripts on this page are provided as examples of technically compatible arrangements for the Musiah Practice Area.
Other similar-looking arrangements may have formatting errors and / or notation inaccuracies. For this reason, we recommend the below links as they are good quality and will display correctly when imported into the Musiah Practice Area.
Once you've imported your song, you're all set — it's now part of your Musiah journey. From here, you can practice it just like any other piece in the app, complete with guidance, feedback, and all the tools that help you progress step by step. Enjoy exploring new music, discovering fresh challenges, and watching your skills grow with every piece you play.
