Truth be told, there are two answers to this question depending on whether we’re talking about;
a) piano students generally or
b) students of Musiah piano lessons.
Let’s start with piano students generally...
Time & Effort Vs Reward
Students in general will cite all sorts of reasons for quitting lessons such as;
1) for adults - work / family commitments, i.e. not enough time for practice
2) for younger students - parents need to take the time to encourage them to practice but often parents can’t due to their busy schedule which arguably brings us back to reason 1) – not enough time
3) for adults and kids - logistical challenges of getting to and from lessons – which is still reason 1), time
4) for teenagers – as homework / study requirements increase, time for practice once again rears its ugly head
So, I’m sure you get the picture – time (or the lack of it) is a commonly cited factor.
Of course, this can be overcome to an extent by prioritizing practice time into the daily routine. At first blush, commitment / dedication (or the lack of it) is indeed a factor - but there are other considerations that lead to students quitting their lessons before real progress is made.
5) Sometimes the teacher is not a good fit. For adults, having to play pieces (mistakes and all) for a teacher who is sitting next to them can be quite embarrassing especially if the adult student has not taken on learning something new for quite some time. So it's important that students are comfortable with their teacher... And for teens and young kids, the right balance between a piano teacher who is likeable and who also challenges students can be hard to find.
6) Perceived lack of progress: In the first 12-18 months, students will often feel that they haven’t made much progress or aren’t very good compared to peers / other students who have been learning a lot longer, and so they can feel discouraged – which is in essence a ‘perceived’ lack of reward for effort.
In summary… the amount of progress made in the first two years is a key factor in determining whether a student will continue lessons.
Unfortunately for 80% of students, they lack one or more of the necessary factors to ensure a reasonable rate of progress, namely;
- a reasonable amount of practice time each day
- a teacher / parent that inspires, nudges and coerces them to aim higher
- a modicum of self-discipline
And so, if the student perceives that the ‘time & effort Vs reward’ equation doesn’t stack up, they quit… which is a shame as almost everyone is capable of learning to play piano really well if they stick at it.
