In this latest Musiah review kindly sent in by adult piano student Nathan Goodwin of Salisbury in Queensland, Australia (pictured opposite), Nathan shares his thoughts on his piano lessons with Musiah to date.
Prior Keyboard Experience: None
Feature most liked: The requirement to get the timing right. It can be frustrating at first when you feel you can play a piece, but Musiah keeps picking up timing problems. But when you eventually get it right, you can then see how it wasn't right before.
Overall satisfaction: 9
Interest in continuing to learn with Musiah: 9
Likelihood of recommending Musiah: 9
Further Comments / Testimonial:
I have been using Musiah for about 7 1/2 months now (with an extended break away from it over Christmas), and am now on level 12, hoping to finish that level in the near future and work on the final level, level 13.
I have found Musiah to be a very good way to stay on track continually improving.
I have tried to teach myself piano on and off in the past, and find I skip over the basics too quickly, and then can't play the more advanced pieces I want to learn.
With Musiah, whilst it may have started a little too basic, it is easy to move through the early levels pretty quickly if you are not a complete beginner.
Very quickly I found myself having to practice to get pieces good enough to pass the auditions.
The thing I liked (in hindsight at least) was that you couldn't move on to higher levels without completing most of the songs in the level at a high standard at full tempo.
Being made to go back and really get to play some of the songs better I think really helps build your piano skills.
The rate at which the pieces get more difficult is challenging, but not so much that you get too frustrated and give up.
Whilst I am looking forward to finishing the Musiah course, I have enjoyed doing the course, and feel I have learned a lot from it, both in reading music, and particularly in building independence of the two hands.
Adult Piano Student
A BIG thank you Nathan for sharing your experience of Musiah’s piano lessons and for the thought you have put into your review. Your feedback and support is greatly appreciated.
And congratulations on your terrific progress so far. I look forward to seeing what you can achieve in the weeks ahead and hope, in the near future, to congratulate you on becoming our next Musiah.
Your observations are spot on in terms of how Musiah helps with timing, reading sheet music and building independence of the two hands.
And in particular, I appreciated your thoughts on how the regimen of being made to go back and play some of the songs better helps with improving skills overall — which has the benefit that you can now play the more advanced pieces.
This is an important and sometimes underrated aspect of Musiah.
In this respect, the dynamic of learning piano with Musiah is similar to that of learning with a good traditional piano teacher.
A good piano teacher will, ordinarily, require students to learn pieces to a reasonable standard before permitting them to advance to newer pieces. And this sensible practice is part of the groundwork of helping students solidify newly acquired skills so they are better able to learn and master more advanced pieces.
Encouraging students to finish pieces to a high standard ultimately increases their enjoyment of the learning process. And it also has an important side-benefit… it helps to instill values such as pride in one’s work, perseverance, and aiming high.
So Well Done Nathan on making it this far, and keep up your great work!
