How To Play Piano

25 January 2013

BHPiano 300There are countless approaches to answering the question of how to play piano in articles online, in blogs, magazines and journals, not to mention the occasional dinner-table conversation at my place.

Some answers take a music theory approach focusing on things like the names of the keys of the piano keyboard, how to place your hands on the keyboard, how to read sheet music, etc. while others take a more pedagogical approach focusing on such areas as how to teach yourself to play piano, methods of how to practice piano, practice tips, playing technique, piano teaching technique, and so on.

Some articles and web sites even promise magical solutions that will have you playing piano like a keyboard king instantly.

But all of these ‘answers’ overlook the very heart of what it takes to learn how to play piano properly.

However you approach learning how to play piano; whether you teach yourself piano, or you attend lessons with a traditional piano teacher (or an innovative alternative to a traditional piano teacher such as Musiah – the world’s first Virtual Piano Teacher), the fundamental answer of what it takes is the same…

Take the experience of Musiah piano student Hayley Waterhouse as an example. (FYI, Hayley wrote a review on how she found learning how to play piano with Musiah some time ago which you can read HERE).

Hayley started learning how to play piano with Musiah in June 2012, so at the time of writing she has been learning piano for approximately six months. During that time, she has learned 125 songs and is currently working on a piece called Gipsy Dance — Lesson #126 on the Musiah Piano Lesson Course.

To give you an idea of how much Hayley has accomplished in that short a space of time, you can view the video below of yours truly playing Gipsy Dance.

To put this in perspective, Gipsy Dance is the last song in Level 11 out of 13 levels on the course. So in the last six months, Hayley has learned what would normally take an average piano student around five or maybe even six years to learn through traditional piano lessons.

So how is she doing it? How is she learning to play piano so effectively in such a short period of time?

Sure, she has had the support of a highly innovative Virtual Piano Teacher to help her along the way, but even Musiah is not miracle worker.

In a recent email to Hayley, I asked her; “How are you going, and more specifically, how are you enjoying Gipsy Dance?”

This is her reply…

......................................................................

Hi Brendan,

I’m going well thanks. Still enjoying the process and still practicing at least 4 x 30 min sessions per week (often more).

Gipsy Dance is a lot of fun. I’m still practicing/learning it on the slow tempo and will just keep practicing to get the speed up.

I haven’t really been able to master separating the hands (letting the left hand go with the rhythm a bit more) but the more I practice the piece and the more each hand gets familiar with their bit it should flow better.

It’s pretty exciting that I’m only six songs away from finishing the course. I’ll miss Musiah but I’ll be looking forward to the challenge of putting into practice what I’ve learned with my favourite music. Because I’ve learned so many songs with Musiah I have a pretty good idea of how to approach a new piece of music.

I love the later levels because while the early levels taught a lot of the theory, the later levels have really shown me how to be patient, persist and enjoy the process. It just gives me time to reinforce the learning so far and gives me goals to work towards so that I don’t lose interest.

Thanks for your email :)

Hayley

......................................................................

Have you seen the secret in Hayley’s reply — the essence of what it takes to learn how to play piano?

It is in the last paragraph where she says “to be patient, persist and enjoy the process".

Regardless of which approach you take to learning how to play the piano, this is the key (no pun intended).

Be patient, persist and enjoy the process.

And this is something that Musiah — if you give him the chance — will help you master.

Musiah is not a gimmicky approach that claims to turn you instantly into a concert pianist with one wave of a wand. He is a very unusual, quality piano teacher that will guide you on your journey, nurturing and nudging you as required, but ultimately, it is your journey.

And if, like Hayley (who in my view is an inspirational student), you can learn to be patient, persist and enjoy the process, you will not only learn how to play the piano, you will grow as a human being in ways that will help you achieve all manner of goals you set your mind and heart on.

More than anything else, this is why I’m so passionate about piano teaching and this is why I created Musiah — the world's first A.I. Virtual Piano Teacher, and the most technologically advanced piano lessons online.
